POKOTABI / Hosen
居酒屋 宝泉 北区王子駅前店
Tucked near Oji Station, the izakaya Hosen welcomes guests with tender, savory yawarime squid, robust draft Hoppy, and affordable pub fare around its nostalgic Showa-era horseshoe counters.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Taking a seat at one of the two horseshoe counters, the first order to make is the classic pairing of yawarime and draft Hoppy. The house specialty, yawarime, sets itself apart from standard dried squid with a moist, tender bite that yields a rich, concentrated squid flavor the more it is chewed. It comes thoroughly steeped in seasoned sauce, making it delicious on its own, though adding a touch of mayonnaise and shichimi pepper lends an appealing extra layer of richness. The draft Hoppy served alongside it packs a solid punch of shochu, offering a dense, satisfying swallow that can only be achieved without ice.
The supporting food lineup is equally grounded in tavern comfort. Diners often order several modest dishes priced in the 300-yen range, such as simmering simmered tofu with beef (niku dofu), freshly fried ham cutlets, quick-cooked garlic chives with egg, or sauteed mini sausages. Those who prefer to adjust their alcohol ratio at their own pace can also order a bottle of Kinmiya shochu alongside draft Hoppy mixers.
Hosen maintains an unhurried, comfortable atmosphere where solo guests can easily drop in to sip a drink in peace. Listening to the easygoing banter with the proprietress while enjoying unpretentious, savory fare makes for an evening steep in old-school Showa charm.
